How to Get Clients Using Online Marketing Strategies

Hi, this is Payson Cooper from http://www.PaysonCooper.com and this is the top 10 tips series on how to get clients through online marketing strategies.

This is tip #7 and we’re going to talk about using SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and keywords to help build the rankings for your website and get better traffic to your website through Google, Yahoo and other search engines.

We’re going to talk all about Keywords, how to find out what they are and a little bit about how to use them.

When you talk about ‘keywords’ you are actually talking about a word or series of words, a phrase, so, for example, in this video, one of the keywords I’m using is ‘How to Get Clients’. I did a little bit of research and found out through the Google Keyword Tool, so if you’ve never done this before, go to Google and search for ‘Google Keyword Tool’, and you will find that there is a tool there that Google provides, where you can put in a phrase, a series of words… and I recommend a series of words, at least 3 words. That’s called a ‘long tail keyword’ when it has more, 3, 4 or 5 words – the longer the ‘tail’, the more words, the more likely it is to be more targeted to your audience.

For example, if someone goes to Google and searches for the word ‘desk’ they are probably not that ready to buy a desk, but if they search, ‘dark brown mahogany desk with six drawers’ they are probably much closer to making that buying decision. So, the idea behind long-tail keywords is that when you have more of them, you will be more likely to have prospects come to your site who are looking to actually make a purchase around the type of solution you provide for their want or their need.

When you start to look at Google keywords, you want to look for keyword phrases that are at least 3 words long, maybe even 4 or 5, and when you go in there, you enter the phrase that you think your prospect is probably looking for on Google. What Google will return to you is the phrases that people are ACTUALLY searching for. You can sort the data based on the number of searches for the keyword each month, alphabetical, so you can sort on a number of different things. So, what you are looking for is a long tail keyword phrase that has a strong number of searches, several hundred to several thousand – maybe many thousands, if you can find one with reasonable levels of competition – so if the competition is at 100%, you will have a harder time ranking for that keyword. If the competition is lower, you can probably do a lot better using that keyword phrase.

(Note: This is not 100% conclusive as the competition data generally has more to do with who is competiting for the phrases in advertising, so if you take the phrase and go to Google and search it there yourself you can see how many websites are actually using the keyword phrase, and then determine if you think you will be able to build ranking over time.)

You then want to use that keyword phrase in everything you do online, you want to use it in blog posts, videos, social media, in online articles. You want to make a list of 10-20 long tail keyword phrases that you want to use consistently over time. This is not a strategy that works overnight, it works over the course of several months – 6 months to a year you can begin to rank for certain keywords.





There are strategies that can get you ranking almost immediately, but that will be a topic for another video sometime, but basically SEO, Search Engine Optimization is like a highly developed art-form. You may want to spend some time finding someone that can train you in how to use Search Engine Optimization.
