A case for an earn-while-you-learn education policy




Visuals of move labourers as they were homeward bound during the national lockdown moved many of us. Unhappily, they are the children or grandchildren of migrant labourers who ran away from home looking for greener pastures. I feel a certain feelings alliance with these moves because I am myself, the lad of a move labourer.My papa “ran away from home” as a teenager before Independence and reached Bombay from Udupi. He was fortunate to create wealth and develop his nine children. What my father did cannot be reproduced today because the labourer without a college degree cannot get rich, his children cannot yielded a college degree.Post-Independence education policy, including reservations, facilitated children from lower-income families of all castes to ensure themselves an education. Education was a guaranteed ticket to rise from poverty.However, 100 million households of labourers were left out of this big story.Now is the time to right this wrong.An alternate college education system must be created for the children of labourers without disturbing the successful mainstream education.Fifty-year-old labourers will vary depending on their 16 -year-old children. The illustration will be clear if we visualise ourselves as the 16 -year-old child of migrant labourers. The soil world today is rampant child malnutrition in rural India- because clas midday meals stopped after Covid. Labourers send their children to clas for menu , not for education.Governments must enable workplaces like hospices, inns, structure firms, and manufacturing industries to offer education and training in-house. Manufacture should provide the contents of formal education in an informal course for specific jobs.Companies will get skilled mitts into these industries at an affordable cost. Trainees can pay enough to cover living outlays and save something to send home. The period of training should be at least for two years. Certificates issued after passing tests conducted by a government body should have a high market value. It are also welcome to be a passage to join the formal education system if these students so desire.Let me explain this based on training of auxiliary nurse midwives( ANMs) that starts after class 10. Every Indian hospital with 200 bottoms should be permitted to conduct ANM and GNM( general wet-nurse and midwifery) courses to qualify dwelling healthcare providers and wet-nurses. Interestingly, ANMs are an important part of the National Health Service of the UK.Nurses with higher diplomata should be deployed to treat cases together with doctors.
